By heating the blades without oxygen, they can break down the resin and free the glass fiber, recovering material that is up to 99.9 percent pure. This process has the potential to revolutionize blade recycling, but it is still in its early stages and faces significant challenges.
The Danish company Vestas and the recycler Stena have taken a major step forward with a new chemical process that dissolves the epoxy binding the blade together, effectively breaking it back down to its raw materials. This development could mean that blades sitting in landfills today could be transformed into new blades, closing the loop on blade recycling.
However, the industry is facing a reckoning. With more than 70,000 land-based turbines in the US, many of which are over 20 years old, the pressure is on to find a solution. The European wind industry has already implemented a landfill ban for retired blades, and several US states are following suit. Vestas has set an ambitious goal of zero-waste turbines by 2040, and the industry is being pushed to find innovative solutions.
The recycling challenge for wind turbine blades is not just a technical problem, but also a cultural and psychological one.
